I hate rats

rats!

I haven't gotten a single tomato off of this plant. Every time they start to turn orange, I come downstairs in the morning and find a big bite taken out of them. I had been removing the gnawed-on tomatoes, but I'm going to leave this one on in the hopes that they'll leave the rest of them alone for the time being.

What do you think is eating the tomatoes? It's creepy to think that it might be a rat. Maybe a mouse or a oppossum (do you have those there?). The net over my blackberries has really helped. I don't find nearly as many partly eaten ones. I also had been picking off and throwing away the partly eaten berries and then recently started leaving them (the net only covers part of the berry bushes) hoping the birds would finish eating the ones they started before starting on new ones.

I'm pretty sure it's rats. They're the only wildlife in our alley. The net is a good idea, but I think it would have to be more like wire mesh to do any good.

Maybe it's time to take your tomato plant for a little field trip to your room. It might not like being inside as much as outside, but you can bet the rats won't get it.

That would be... difficult. The rats' favorite tomato plant shares a large pot with another tomato plant that is very viney. Right now I've got it tied to the deck railing every couple of feet. Also, I've never heard of tomatoes being grown inside. How do they get pollinated?

But I've read that rats dislike mint, so I stuck several skewers full of mint leaves in the pot with the tomatoes, so we'll see if that makes any difference.

with our weather your uncle rick's tomatoes seldom ripen fully before weather starts to cool, he waits as long as he can, then picks them and they ripen in the kitchen window. we did that with a pumpkin once too...picked it green and it ripened to orange in the house...

Good idea. There's one that's getting pretty orange--maybe I'll pick it after work today.
