I'm thinking of *trying* to draft a tactful email to Dave suggesting that negative motivation ("fail at SCOPE, fail at life!" "25 years from now you'll be crying into your beers" etc) is not helpful, and actually, for me, only has the effect of making me resent SCOPE. I like my team and our project. I don't want to resent SCOPE.

Good idea? Bad idea?

The problem is, I don't know what effect it'd have. He's been very good at blocking out things he doesn't agree with.

But I don't know who else it could go to. The other faculty I've talked to about my issues have only kind of said "Yeah. Me too."

You should probably try to bring it up to him, but the better solution for your sanity may be to laugh about it. Ben Linder and I spent much of Dave Barrett's little "pep" talk giggling about how dark he has become. It made everything not so life-and-death serious.
Also, we're considering making a D-Bear voodoo bear at build a bear for a different type of catharsis.

Yes--to Mikell. Dave seems to be covered in Scotch-Guard. So the email must be worded strongly enough that he can't dismiss it, but still be polite. I'm game.

Laughter is probably a healthy response. My reaction was more of a mouth-open-in-disbelief look.

I'd definitely be interested in meeting voodoo D-Bear, if that happens. Actually, I would chip in some money.
