welcome back

Just found out that one of the new housemates has been stealing from another housemate. Suddenly wishing that I had a lock for my door. Should I set up my computer to take pictures every few minutes? Does 72 hours sound like a reasonable amount of time to give him to move out?

AAAAHHHHH I hate him for making it harder to trust people.

But I had a really nice trip home for Thanksgiving.

Damn that sucks.

I think you technically have to give someone 30 days notice for a regular eviction. He probably doesn't know that though but you might want to check the laws around there.

If it was serious stealing I'd have them out of there immediately really. Just call the police and see if they can do anything to help. You don't want to leave a thief around your things especially when they're going to be pissed off about being kicked out of the house. Especially cuz the pictures thing isn't gonna work if they take your computer.

Good luck, I hope it works out for y'all.

For someone who steals, I think 72 hours is extremely generous. Honestly, I'd throw them out right then and there and tell em to find a hotel. Let them come get their stuff at some point later, but I wouldn't let them stay in the house.

But that's not a very forgiving attitude.

If you are going to go the 'photos every X' route, make sure you upload the photos to the 'net after you take them; that way if someone steals your computer you still have the photos.

Yeah, I think we're hoping that once we tell him that we want him out, he'll not want to live where he's not wanted. If that doesn't work, I don't know what we'll do... one thing that probably helps is that he didn't pass the credit check to get on the lease, so he's listed as a resident and not a tenant.

We can't call the police because the stuff that was stolen was pot. He's just a sketchy character and tends to deny everything even when all evidence points to him. Even little stuff like leaving hair in the drain in the shower, he denies ("but you're the only one in the house with curly black hair..." "it wasn't me. I would never do that." "but..."). In this case, he was the only person who knew that this other housemate had any pot, and the pot was hidden pretty well. He must have gone through the whole room looking for it.

Chris - I did a search and found that some guy set up his Macbook to take a picture every time it woke up, and upload the picture to Flickr. Maybe tonight I'll see if I can get that to work.
