when the working day is done

Okay, I did miss Pride, but last night I went to the True Colors concert with Joelle, which pretty much makes up for it. Joelle brought a quilt to sit on, and although we were there when the doors opened, the time went pretty quickly with some quality crowd-watching.

The Gossip opened, and they were fantastic. I have a couple of their songs, but I really need to get an album. Their most familiar song is available for download here, and they have a new video. Next were the Dresden Dolls, who were also wonderful, and who also have a new video (with appearances by Margaret Cho and Kelly ("betch")). Oh yeah, Margaret Cho was hosting the whole thing. She and Diana Yanez did a little rap, which I caught on my camera, but today I found out that there's already a music video that obviously puts my recording to shame. Rosie O'Donnell came on at some point, and she was funny, but also still pretty hung up on the Donald Trump thing. Rufus Wainwright and his band were all dressed in clashing vertical striped items of clothing, plus copious rhinestone brooches. His music was nice, but not really my thing. Debbie Harry was a big disappointment... I don't know if there are some copyright issues keeping her from doing Blondie songs or something, but she did all new stuff that was pretty mediocre. The crowd was polite, but she obviously knew they weren't loving her because she stalked offstage after her last song without even a wave. Erasure got a lot of crowd love. Everyone was up and dancing. I don't think I'd heard any of their songs before (maybe a couple of years too young?), but a lot of people were singing along. After Debbie Harry, I was worried that Cyndi Lauper would also flop, but she was just amazing. She did a few new, good songs, and a lot of old songs that everyone loves. The only questionable song in my opinion was She Bop, which was performed as a slow ballad... it was strange. All of the artists (except Debbie and, I think, Rufus) came back on stage to sing True Colors at the very end, and we all dutifully swayed and sang along. And, keeping up what is becoming a tradition, apparently, I teared up, got sunscreen in my eyes, and then couldn't stop crying (normally it's the PFLAG parents in the parade that get me).

And on a completely unrelated subject, what has my rosemary spawned??

rosemary and... something

I assumed it was more rosemary, but it's... not. It seems like more of a succulent, but it really does seem to be growing out of the base of the rosemary plant...

Rosemary is a lot of fun to use. I wished I had thought about growing it. I only started using it, but here are a couple of ideas . . .

Rosemary goes well with potatoes. You can sautee them together with some butter or olive oil or throw them together in the oven.

If you have some rosemary that you want to preserve, you can toss a few sprigs in some olive oil (about half cup) and heat for about five minutes over low heat. Let it cool and now you have some rosemary-infused oil! It goes well with salads, bread, and even popcorn. I got the idea from Giada De Laurentis's Everyday Italian.

I wonder what cooking qualities your rosemary impostor has . . .

Oh yeah, my mom used to make herbed potatoes a lot when I was growing up, and I liked them... but then they had them so often at Olin. I should try them again though.

The rosemary impostor does not really smell like anything, and when I tried to crush a leafe, it just squished all over my fingers, so I'm not inclined to try eating it.

Thanks for the ideas!

That plant looks like a plant that Effie has in her garden. It reseeds itself every year. I wouldn't cook with it. I'll try to find out what it is.

Oh Sarah,

That is not an herb, that is moss rose. A very beautiful, somewhat easy to grow flower. Not edible.

Cheers,

Thanks! I figured that even if it was a weed, it was a pretty one, so I left it alone. It's been blooming a lot.
